A scholarly research network and seminar focused on the academic study of the historical and modern reception of John's Apocalypse (Revelation). Started by Nathan Betz (Regensburg), Régis Burnet (Louvain-la-Neuve), and Cristian Cardozo Mindiola (Medellín), T. C. Schmidt (New Haven).


What is ‘music in an apocalyptic mode.’? I will first give a general overview of the topic, then focus in on the specific example of composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) and his threshold works during his breakthrough move to atonality from late 1907 to 1909. I will set the stage via an overview of the late Romantic milieu in which Schoenberg developed his art, then discuss the artistic movement of expressionism and Schoenberg’s role as prophetic revelator before concluding with a brief analysis of his Second String Quartet, Op. 10.
